Neighbourhood Houses Fear Funding Cuts

11 August 2022

Around half of Victoria's Neighbourhood Houses are facing an uncertain future if recurrent state government funding is not secured, the sector says.

Ballarat East Neighbourhood Centre and Charlton Neighbourhood House in north central Victoria are among 27 new facilities reliant on supplementary funding.

Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre executive officer Vicki Coltman said each Neighbourhood House was tailored to the wants and needs of its community.

"Each house is different. If you come to us, we focus on helping people get jobs," Ms Coltman explained.

"The new house in Ballarat East has a focus on providing support for residents in Canadian through to Brown Hill. They do lots of art and support-type activities."

Ms Coltman said the Ballarat East service ran out of office spaces and was in the process of looking for a standalone home, and it needed funding certainty to move forward.

"If the funding isn't secured, the whole community misses out. It will just fold," she said.

Charlton Neighbourhood House president Kaylene Cossar told ABC Wimmera Breakfast's Rebekah Lowe the facility would likely close if funding was not secured.

"It would be devastating for a town like Charlton ... we're not in a position where there are other organisations that can deliver the same level of support," she said.

"There are a lot of flow-on effects if something like this isn't funded."

Ms Cossar said Buloke Shire Council had been approached to support Charlton Neighbourhood House in advocating for funding.
