Mary Douglas, our gift of joy!

20 December 2023

At the City of Ballarat Seniors Awards on the 31st October, Mary Douglas was honoured with the Ageing Well Award for her many years of contribution to the community. A tireless volunteer, Mary has volunteered for 12 years with Ballarat Hospice to support palliative patients and their families, as well as four years at Lifeline to provide suicide prevention services and helping people experiencing emotional distress.

She currently volunteers two days a week in the Social Enterprise Kitchen at Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre where she is involved in preparing and serving food, setting up and packing down for 100 community members every week. She is a great mentor for her kitchen team mates and highly regarded by the wider Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre team. Mary was nominated by the team at the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre.

They have described Mary to be our gift of JOY, and an inspiration to others with her kind compassionate heart. Mary’s dedication and selflessness lightens the load of her team mates and makes an enormous difference to the lives and wellbeing of members of her community. Mary enjoys giving back to her community and putting a smile on everyone’s face. On behalf of the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre we would like to congratulate Mary Douglas on her Ageing Well Award.
