Sebastopol Tram Mural

04 February 2024

If you’re driving along Albert Street, you might catch a glimpse of something new at the Royal Mail Hotel.

A Sebastopol Tram Mural has been installed on the side of the building, capturing an important aspect of the history of Sebastopol; the trams that for many years transported residents and goods to and from the centre of Ballarat.

The mural photographs feature Tram 37 at the terminus out the front of the Royal Mail Hotel in 1935, with two of its drivers, and a horse drawn tram making its way along Albert Street in the early 1900’s.

This project was developed by Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre, Sebastopol Historical Society Victoria and Ballarat Tramway Museum, to bring some of Sebastopol’s history to life for its current residents.

Members of the groups involved, along with local residents, Juliana Addison MP and Ballarat Councillors   gathered on 27 November 2023 to celebrate the installation.

This Public Art project was supported through the Spotlight on Sebastopol program, the City of Ballarat and funded by Regional Development Victoria.
