Mt Pleasant History Mural

27 February 2020

In 2018, passionate Mt Pleasant community member Bernadette Duffy had an idea for a mural in Mt Pleasant, to help preserve and mark the important history of the area. Bernadette was successful in applying for an Engaging Communities Program Grant through the City of Ballarat to implement the project and partnered with Mount Pleasant History Group, Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre and Ballarat East Neighbourhood House to bring the mural to life.

The final artwork was a large-scale composite drawing of the Mount Pleasant tram at the end of the line, along with historical notes, which were mounted on the corner of Barkly and Cobden Streets in Mt Pleasant. Cobden Street was originally the end of the tram line, where Mt Pleasant residents would socialise and shop for necessities without the need to travel into town. The mural provides a wonderful way for locals and visitors to learn about the history of the area while creating a sense of community pride. Congratulations to all involved in the development of this wonderful public artwork!
